As parents, we always want to keep our children safe. Expecting moms and dads research the safest car seats, newest strollers, diapers, and so much more. When we meet our newborn for the first time, we love them dearly and just want the best for them as they grow up. Those newborns quickly grow into curious little toddlers, with active little minds and bodies! Being a parent is full of tough choices, and the majority of us do everything we can to keep them safe. Would it surprise you to know that the leading cause of accidental death for a child under 4 is drowning? After I had my first child, I had no idea myself! Even with the proper safeguards in place, accidents can still happen very quickly. Fortunately, there is a nationwide resource for parents available here in Jacksonville, FL. Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is a program that I discovered seven years ago, when my daughter was about one year old, and have continued to use for all three of my children over the years. As a photographer that meets many parents of newborns, I want to spread the word about this program to other local parents who feel it is a good fit for their family!
ISR | Little Seal Swim School | Jacksonville
You may be wondering "What is ISR?" Infant Swimming Resource lessons are based on the "Not One More Child Drowns" mission of ISR. These Self-Rescue® lessons were founded in 1966, and have been skillfully researched and perfected through the years. ISR has over 450 highly trained instructors in the US, and that includes some great ones here in Jacksonville!
Two instructors that I have had the pleasure of working with are Heather Smith and Michelle Auth. These ladies are patient, kind, and overall very wonderful with children. They have also just opened an indoor pool to teach local Jacksonville (and surrounding area) children year round, at Little Seals Swim School. Here, babies ages 6-12 months, will learn to roll on to their backs to float, and children ages 1 to 6 years will learn to not only float, but also swim and float until they can safely reach the side of the pool. Each lesson is 10 minutes per day, and five days per week. It is a time commitment, but I have always been amazed at what these young children learn. Because of this program, my kids have become excellent swimmers! There is never any substitute for proper supervision at the pool, but I do feel like my children have been equipped as much as possible in case they ever accidentally fell into water unattended.
Recently, I was able to capture a few photographs of some ISR lessons at the new Little Seal Swim School! This location is absolutely beautiful, and Heather and Michelle have thought of everything from the changing tables and pool necessities down to the adorable decor. It makes for a fun atmosphere for children to show off their skills! It is so neat to watch these kids swim with confidence! Are there tears? Well, sometimes. But that's ok. The instructors are carefully trained to teach children very gradually, step by step. They are constantly listening for breaths, and very vigilant about how the child is feeling during the lesson.
If you feel like you might be interested in enrolling your baby or young child in these lessons, I encourage you to contact Little Seal Swim School. Parents are welcome to come and observe lessons to see how it all works!
